Abstract

Women comprise around 40 percent and man roughly 60 percent of principle farm operators in Austria. On the one hand, Computer Assisted Telephone Interviews (CATI) were conducted in spring 2015 to meet the educational and extension needs by gender in the field of agrarian entrepreneurship; the random sample included 376 farms. Additionally, the sample was divided into three age categories: 39, 40-54 and 55 years and older. Supplementary to the quantitative approach, group discussions with farmers were implemented in the first half year 2015. The educational and extension needs differ partially by gender. The discrepancies increase significantly by taking the age categories into account. Especially young female farmers were particularly interested in further education and extension. They used most frequently the common information sources for entrepreneurship and ask for - similar to young male farmers - many educational and consulting topics. Finally, we derived recommendations from the study in hand for target group oriented and gender sensitive education and extension in the agrarian entrepreneurship.
