Abstract
Quality of teachers and possibilities of making the assessment of their competences more objective belong to the most discussed educational issues in recent years. Due to the rapid changes of society, the requirements on teachers' competences are constantly changing. Current methods and tools of teacher assessment, however, resist this pressure. The paper discusses the approaches, methods and tools used in teacher evaluation in Slovakia and other European countries. Based on the outcomes of the project Assessment of Teachers Competences carried out by the research team from Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra it also presents new research findings on how the assessment performance could be improved and made more objective by making it more particularized and applying self-evaluation sheets for teachers to express their position on lessons observed by assessors.
